About This Quote

We don’t know exactly how they are made, but stars are formed when a cloud of gas collapses under the force of its own gravity. When this happens, there is a sudden increase in temperature that causes the atoms in the cloud to break up. The newly formed star is made of hydrogen gas, so it is mostly made of H-radiation, which is what makes stars shine. When the hydrogen gas becomes hot enough to start fusing together, it forms helium gas, which has a lower boiling point than hydrogen. The helium gas then combines with nearby hydrogen atoms to form carbon dioxide.

The carbon dioxide attracts more nearby hydrogen atoms and eventually even the helium atoms, causing the star to grow larger and larger as it continues to fuse together more and more hydrogen into heavier elements. Eventually, after millions of years, the star will become too heavy to maintain its core temperature. But it won’t burn out; instead, it will cool off until it finally becomes stable, at which point it will start fusing heavier elements—until it reaches iron.

Sometimes this takes millions of years, but every now and then a star will reach iron all on its own without any prior fusion and will collapse under its own gravity until nothing remains but an incredibly dense solid core called a white dwarf. Many stars live for billions of years and die many times before reaching iron. Even so, they go through their life cycle over and over again as there is always another group of hydrogen atoms waiting for them to die so they can take their place among the stars once again.
